American
Cinemathique and Paramount
Pictures are proudly presenting
the 50th Anniversary of the
science-fiction film classic "The
War of the Worlds". The film's
original stars, Gene Barry and
Ann Robinson will be presiding
over the special Anniversary Gala
and screening to take place at
Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre on
August 7, 2003.
-----The
film, which was produced by
legendary special effects master
George Pal, was based on the 1898
H.G. Wells classic novel of the
same title. The original radio
broadcast of the story about a
Martian invasion of Earth was
acted out on the air by Orson
Welles in 1938. Welles was so
convincing in his depiction of
the story that thousands of
terrified people across the
country literally believed that
Martians had indeed landed.
-----
"The War
of the Worlds", which won an
Oscar for its phenomenal special
effects, is considered to be one
of the greatest science-fiction
masterpieces of all time. Many
great contemporary directors cite
it as being one of their favorite
films, including Steven
Spielberg. Variety magazine has
reported that Tom Cruise will be
producing and will possibly star
in a remake of "The War of the
Worlds". According to Sherry
Lansing, chair of Paramount
Pictures Motion Picture Group,
"'The War of the Worlds' is a
timeless literary treasure and
one of our most exciting
properties. Since Paramount has
enjoyed such tremendous success
partnering with Cruise/Wagner,
there is clearly no better team
to entrust this to". Tom Cruise
and his business
partner/co-producer Paula Wagner
worked with Paramount on
"Mission: Impossible" and
"Vanilla Sky".
-----
The 50th
Anniversary of "The War of the
Worlds" is indeed already proving
to be generating much excitement.
The 25th Anniversary
"re-premiere" was also an
exciting success. The grand event
took place at Hollywood's "Holly
Theatre" and reunited leading
lady Ann Robinson and producer
George Pal for the first time
since they had worked together on
the film in the early fifties.
Co-star Les Tremayne was also on
hand. Larry Leverett helped
coordinate the special gala,
which was complete with klieg
lights, glamorous stars, and full
radio and TV coverage. Larry is
currently busy helping Ann
Robinson and Richard Eastman to
coordinate this 50th Anniversary
Gala as well.
